Winter 2016 Community Education Programs


Beginning Dog Obedience Level I


Handlers will teach their dog the beginning basic obedience commands; dogs will learn to heel by their side, to sit on command, to down on command, to stand for exam and to come on command. Participants will also work on basic household obedience exercises and socialization. Dogs must be current on vaccines. On the first night of class, please bring your dog’s shot record and your dog.
2 classes offered:
Wednesdays, 1/20/16 to 2/24/16 (6 weeks), 6-7 p.m.
Saturdays, 1/23/16 to 3/5/16 (6 weeks), no class on 2/13, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Beginning Dog Obedience Level II

This class is for dogs that have completed a basic beginning level training class. The handler understands the commands and has fairly good control over the dog, with the dog walking by the handler’s side. The skills learned in basic obedience will be used and handlers and dogs will be challenged to further their skills. Participants will work towards teaching the dog off leash work. This will vary depending on the dog/handler team and their skill level.

 Therapy Dog Certification Course

This class prepares and trains dogs for therapy dog certification under the Therapy Dog International Organization. Handlers will train dogs for the 13 exercises that are used in the test (available at while being introduced to a number of items commonly seen in a hospital/nursing facility. Dogs must be under good control and be able to heel by the side of the handler. A dog must be one year of age to be tested and must have an outstanding temperament. Therapy dogs must be outgoing and friendly to all people: men, women and children. Dogs must be tolerant and non-aggressive toward other dogs of either gender. It is strongly recommended that dogs have completed and passed an obedience training class. Certification testing may be done off site. The instructor will provide further testing information. There will be a separate testing fee of approximately $20.

Water Aerobics

Shallow water aerobics is a fun, low impact class that gets you moving! This workout will get your heart pumping, tone and build muscle, and increase flexibility. Class is open to adults, senior citizens, high school students and middle school students, if accompanied by an adult. Non-swimmers are welcome.

Session 2 registration fees: $60 for 24 classes or $30 for 12 classes

Lap Swim

1/12/16 to 5/26/16, no lap swim on 2/16, 2/18, 4/5, or 4/7
5:45 a.m. – 6:45 a.m.
The cost is $2 per visit and is paid at the pool. Pre-registration is not required. In the event that school is closed due to weather or for a holiday, lap swim will not be held.


Open Swim

7-8 p.m.
Saturdays, 1/9/16 to 4/30/16, no swim on 2/13, 4/2, 4/9
10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The cost is $2 per person per visit or $5 per family per visit and is paid at the pool. Pre-registration is not required. In the event that school is closed due to weather or for a holiday, open swim will not be held.

Registration Forms
Registration forms must be received a minimum of five days prior to the start of the class unless stated otherwise. A link to the registration form is below.

Enrollment Information
Registrations are not confirmed. You will be contacted ONLY in the event of a time change, date change or class cancellation.

School Closings
In the event that school is closed due to inclement weather, Community Education programs will be cancelled. Programs will be rescheduled as time permits. Local radio and television stations will feature school closings, along with the OPS Weather Line at 989-725-1227, the district website and Facebook page.

Class Cancellations

Cancellations are sometimes necessary. Programs depend upon paid registrations. Offerings may be cancelled due to low enrollment. If cancellations are made, registrants will be notified and a full refund will be issued. Due to many late registrations we do not cancel a class until the evening prior to the start of the class. Please provide all phone numbers necessary to reach you in the event of a cancellation. To avoid cancellations, bring a friend or family member and register early.

Refund Policy

A full refund will be made if:

Community Education cancels the class

Class fills before your registration is received

NO REFUNDS if you cancel on the day the class begins.

NO REFUNDS will be made after the class has started, regardless of attendance.


Owosso Public Schools reserves the right to photograph classes and program participants for promotional purposes.
