Winter 2018 Community Education Programs


Beginning Dog Obedience Level 1
Handlers will teach their dog the beginning basic obedience commands; dogs will learn to heel by their side, to sit on command, to down on command, to stand for exam and to come on command. Participants will also work on basic household obedience exercises and socialization. Dogs must be current on vaccines. Bordatella is recommended. On the first day of class, please bring your dog’s shot record, a leash (not retractable) and your dog. Recommended age 6 months and older. Pre-registration is required. Two classes will be offered.

Tuesdays, 1/30/18 to 3/6/18 (6 weeks)
6-7 p.m. OR 7-8 p.m.

Small Breed Puppy Dog Obedience (ages 12 weeks to 6 months)

This class is designed for small breed dogs who will weigh less than 30 pounds at adulthood. Handlers will teach their puppy the beginning basic obedience commands such as to heel by your side, to come when called, to sit and to down on command. Participants will work on household manners such as not jumping, to wait at the door, as well as introducing puppies to toe nail trimming, ear cleaning, other grooming tasks and socialization skills. Puppy play time will be a part of the program. Puppies must be current on vaccines, Bordatella is recommended also. On first day of class, please bring your puppy’s shot record, a leash (not retractable), soft small treats, and your puppy.  Please note: the Puppy Obedience Classes may be combined if minimum enrollment numbers are not met.

Large Breed Puppy Dog Obedience (ages 12 weeks to 6 months)

Therapy Dog Certification Course

Will be scheduled in next rotation of classes. If you are interested in this course, please email Cheryl Barton directly. A minimum of 6 dogs are required to run this class. Dogs must have taken basic level training classes.  Dogs will learn the skills to be prepared for evaluation for “Therapy Dog International” testing.  Evaluation will be done by a certified TDI evaluator. Additional fee for evaluation, due at that time. Testing requirements may be found on TherapyDogInternational.com. Please email your questions and interest to cbartondd@gmail.com or call 989-277-0976.  Class fee is $50.00 for 6 class sessions.

 

Water Aerobics
Shallow water aerobics is a fun, low impact class that gets you moving! This workout will get your heart pumping, tone and build muscle, and increase flexibility. Class is open to adults, senior citizens, high school students and middle school students, if accompanied by an adult. Non-swimmers are welcome. Classes are taught by Danielle Lab and take place in the OHS pool.
Session 1: Mondays and Thursdays, 1/8/18 to 3/1/18 (9 classes), 6:45-7:45 p.m.
No class on 1/15, 1/22, 1/25, 2/1, 2/5, 2/19, 2/26
$25 registration fee or $4 per walk-in
Session 2: Mondays and Thursdays, 3/12/18 to 5/31/18 (19 classes), 6-7 p.m.
No class on 3/29, 4/2, 4/5, 5/24, 5/28
$50 registration fee or $4 per walk-in

 

Lap Swim
Lap swimming is open to all community members and takes place in the Owosso High School pool.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1/9/18 to 5/31/18, 6:15-7:15 a.m.
No lap swim on 2/13, 2/15, 4/3, 4/5
The cost is $2 per visit and is paid at the pool. Pre-registration is not required. In the event that school is closed due to weather or for a holiday, lap swim will not be held.

 

Open Swim

Open swim is open to all community members and takes place in the Owosso High School pool.
Mondays, 3/5/18 to 5/21/18, 7-8 p.m.
No open swim on: 4/2
Saturdays, 1/13/18 to 5/19/18, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
No open swim on 2/17, 3/31, 4/7
The cost is $2 per person per visit or $5 per family per visit and is paid at the pool. Pre-registration is not required. In the event that school is closed due to weather or for a holiday, open swim will not be held. 

 

 

General Information

Registration Forms
Registration forms must be received a minimum of five days prior to the start of the class unless stated otherwise. A link to the registration form is below.

Enrollment Information
Registrations are not confirmed. You will be contacted ONLY in the event of a time change, date change or class cancellation.

School Closings
In the event that school is closed due to inclement weather, Community Education programs will be cancelled. Programs will be rescheduled as time permits. Local radio and television stations will feature school closings, along with the OPS Weather Line at 989-725-1227, the district website and Facebook page.


Class Cancellations

Cancellations are sometimes necessary. Programs depend upon paid registrations. Offerings may be cancelled due to low enrollment. If cancellations are made, registrants will be notified and a full refund will be issued. Due to many late registrations we do not cancel a class until the evening prior to the start of the class. Please provide all phone numbers necessary to reach you in the event of a cancellation. To avoid cancellations, bring a friend or family member and register early.


Refund Policy

A full refund will be made if:

Community Education cancels the class

Class fills before your registration is received

NO REFUNDS if you cancel on the day the class begins.

NO REFUNDS will be made after the class has started, regardless of attendance.
